SAP Sapphire 2026: Joule, Claude & AI are changing warehouse logistics

SAP Sapphire 2026 focused entirely on artificial intelligence and the "Autonomous Enterprise." For logistics and EWM managers, one question is paramount: What impact will these developments have on warehouse operations?

The answer is: SAP EWM remains the central system for warehouse operations, but it is increasingly being enhanced by AI-powered functions, intelligent decision support, and stronger integration of automation technologies. This signals a shift from classic warehouse management to an intelligent and increasingly autonomous warehouse.

Joule and Claude: More than just a chatbot

A key component of SAP's strategy is Joule, SAP's AI assistant. At the same time, SAP is committed to an open AI ecosystem and integrates powerful models such as Claude from Anthropic.

The goal is not to replace existing processes or SAP EWM. Rather, it is to support users in their decision-making and make information available more quickly.

This will change the way we interact with SAP systems in the long term. Instead of gathering information through numerous transactions and reports, users will be able to interact with the system more effectively using natural language.

From transactions to dialog-based control

For many years, working with SAP was characterized by transactions and manual process steps. However, the developments of SAP Sapphire 2026 point in a clear direction:

  • less searching for information,
  • faster decision-making,
  • stronger support through AI,
  • Focus on exceptional cases rather than routine tasks.

Especially in warehouse environments, where decisions often have to be made under time pressure, this form of support can offer significant added value.

AI-supported decision support in the warehouse

This opens up numerous application possibilities for SAP EWM.

For example, employees or key users will be able to access information more easily in the future:

  • Which warehouse areas are currently experiencing particularly high utilization?
  • Where do bottlenecks occur?
  • Which orders or process steps currently have the highest priority?
  • Which processes require special attention?

Instead of evaluating different monitors and transactions, the system can analyze relationships and provide the relevant information immediately.

As a result, the focus is increasingly shifting from pure data collection to the control and monitoring of processes.

Improved transparency regarding resources and capacities

Another focus of Sapphire's announcements is the use of AI to support operational decisions.

AI-supported analyses could contribute to this in the future,

  • to better estimate expected workloads,
  • To identify capacity bottlenecks early,
  • to use resources more efficiently,
  • To make operational decisions faster.

Especially in warehouses with highly fluctuating order volumes, an early response to peak loads can contribute to more stable processes.

Smarter support in exceptional cases

In many warehouses, employees and key users spend a significant portion of their time processing exceptions.

These include, for example:

  • delayed shipments,
  • missing stocks,
  • blocked storage spaces,
  • critical delivery dates,
  • Disruptions in automated areas.

AI-based assistants can help to identify connections more quickly and support decision-making processes.

This allows operational teams to focus more attention on critical situations, while standard procedures continue to be handled efficiently.

SAP EWM as an orchestration platform for automation

Another key focus of SAP's strategy is the increasing integration of automated warehouse technology.

SAP EWM is increasingly evolving into a central platform for coordinating different technologies:

  • Conveyor technology,
  • Material flow systems (MFS),
  • automatic warehouses,
  • Robotics solutions,
  • automated transport systems,
  • manual processes.

The challenge of the future is not just to operate individual systems, but to coordinate the interaction of all components in real time.

SAP is therefore increasingly positioning EWM as an orchestration platform for hybrid warehouse environments.

Seamless end-to-end processes

In addition to the warehouse itself, the integration of the entire supply chain is also coming more into focus.

In particular, the interlocking of

  • SAP EWM,
  • SAP TM,
  • Planning and execution systems

It is to be further expanded.

This allows information to be exchanged more quickly along the entire supply chain and decisions to be made across the board.

The era of isolated system and process silos should thus be increasingly overcome.

What does this mean for SAP EWM consultants?

The requirements for SAP EWM consultants could also change further in the coming years.

In addition to classic process and customizing knowledge, other topics are likely to gain in importance:

  • Artificial intelligence,
  • Data quality and data models,
  • Automation,
  • End-to-end process design,
  • Integration of different systems,
  • Exception and decision-making processes.

In the future, there will be a demand not only for experts in individual transactions, but increasingly for specialists who understand processes holistically and can design intelligent solutions.

Conclusion

SAP Sapphire 2026 clearly demonstrates that SAP EWM will not be replaced. Rather, the system is gradually evolving from a classic warehouse management system into an intelligent control and orchestration platform.

Joule, Claude, and AI will not replace humans in the warehouse. Rather, they are intended to help provide information faster, support decisions, and manage complex processes more efficiently.

For companies, this means a further step towards the intelligent warehouse – and in the long term towards a more autonomous supply chain.
